MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POST:
– Grade 12 (senior certificate) or equivalent
– Degree / National Diploma in Social Work
– Proof of registration with SACSSP as a Social Worker
– Proof of current registration with the SACSSP as a Social Worker
– Valid driver’s license
– Proof of current and previous experience endorsed by Human Resources
NB: previous exposure to psychosocial support for TB/HIV patients and placement of patients at
different institutions will be advantageous.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
– Sound knowledge of current health and public service legislation, regulations and policies.
– Knowledge in application of social work, practice and ethics.
– Good communication, team building, problem solving and report writing skills.
– Demonstrate leadership ability, discipline and interpersonal relationship skills.
– An ability to function under pressure and with psychiatric patients.
– Ability to communicate in a professional manner at all times.
– Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
– Basic computer literacy
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
 Collaborating with multi-disciplinary team in the planning and management of family and
psychosocial problems of inpatients, including social interventions when indicated in family /
relationship issues
 Individual / family counselling as required.
 Supporting Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) babies.
GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER
 Provision of support to mothers whose babies have died during pregnancy (IUDs).
 Psychotherapy for suicidal patients, drug overdose and Para suicidal patients.
 Psychotherapy on patients for sexual assaults patients (babies and adults) including parents.
 Management of abandoned babies.
 Managing of social cases in the facility.
 Tracing of patients for pauper’s burial.
 Continuous support of patients living with HIV/AIDS.
 Participate in developing care and discharge plans, including placement of patients needing
institutional care on discharge from the hospital.
 Assist with care plan for children / other vulnerable dependents left at home
 Assisting TB patients and their families access benefits and support networks, including patient
education on rights, responsibilities and resources available to them
 Accessing disability grants through welfare system
 Liaise with employers & Department of Labour re pension & UIF benefits
 Policy responsibilities: Include training and education of staff and all patients regarding healthy
nutritional practices, developing protocols and guidelines for all staff, and procurement and control of
nutritional supplements.
 Administrative responsibilities: Record keeping, compilation of reports and attending meetings as
required by management structure.
 General requirements include responsibility, efficiency and provision of an optimal dietetic service.
